I once heard someone say ”The two most important days in your life is the day you were born and the day you find out why.” These words really spoke to me. I truly believe that each one of us are here on this earth for a very specific purpose. What were you made for? What is your why?
I believe the reason for so much violence, anger, frustration, suicide, murder, corruption and deviance in the world is because most people simply do not know their purpose. They don’t know their why? There is a void.
Knowing your why creates in you this incredibly strong drive, power, energy and focus. A motivation that enables you to stand strong through tough times, and to wake up in the mornings with a positive outlook on your life. Suddenly your world is about so much more than yourself, in fact, it is actually less about yourself – it is about other people and something bigger.
I had the privilege of experiencing my A’ha moment earlier this year. A moment when I started to understand my why. It was a great event in my life, but I also know that it going to be a continued process. In July of this year, I took some time to create my “Chief Purpose Statement (CPS)” – a statement of my purpose and vision for the next three years of my life. Since I created it, I have been reading it to myself out loud every morning and evening. Here are a couple paragraphs of my statement:
“I was placed on this earth with a purpose. To glorify Him in everything I do and to deeply love and serve the people around me.
With this purpose God also gifted me to speak, teach, and coach. I am called to help high potential leaders became intentional about their own performance and development so that they can become better leaders, and live fuller and more powerful lives. I love the work I am doing. I am aligned with my purpose every day.
I am consumed by God’s blessing in my life and am living to be a blessing to the people on my path. I am invested in my marriage and am happily married. I love my wife and am able to daily spend quality time with her.
Each and every day, I am making incredible progress. I am fulfilling my purpose and feel focused, committed, and present.”
I was hesitant to share this with you, but I want to be real and authentic with you. I am willing to be so exposed before you, because I believe this is one of the most important things to grasp in life.
It is amazing how much time we spend on our our goals or resolutions for the coming year. Certainly, it is great to define those things, but we should also go deeper.
Some of the most influential leaders of our time were all driven by their powerful why. Think of Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandi, and Abraham Lincoln to name a few. Something bigger than themselves drove them.
What is your why?
Why do you do what you do?
What is driving you?
I want to encourage you to take some time this holiday season to write your CPS. If you are interested, just email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will send you a template you could use.
